But what I remember most clearly about the day was the temperature, which was something like minus 3 Farenheit (ie -20 C); nevertheless, Cheryl Barnes was out there all day lip-synching. ——- quicksite — Finally here is someone who can set the record straight! Elsewhere I had read that this was a one-take performance… but that can mean many things: All of the shots here come from the same one take, or this was accomplished on the first take — and no others were shot… But you are saying this was performed repeatedly and lip-synced …Were you there long enough to know if this vocal track was shot & mic’d live on location — and when they had a take they liked vocally they then shot it for camera, with lip syncing to that track? Or do you mean this was sung in a studio & lip-synced on site? Or do you mean that indeed it was shot live in CLOSEUP in 1-take, then THAT playback was used for all the medium shots, cutaways, reverse angles? My guess would be they lit it, rehearsed, then shot her in closeup, the principal take — and in one take she nailed it — then they used THAT track as playback for rest of the day for establishing shots …

Stupid me for choosing this video to learn FinalCut on! Anyway, this video is my tribute to the incredible dancer/choreographer Bob Fosse. I’ve included in this tribute: films Fosse choreographed, ones he appeared in himself, and, also, the film versions of some of the Broadway shows he choreographed (which is why films like “Chicago” and “Bells Are Ringing” are on here). All of them show the hallmarks of Fosse’s iconic style (as did Michael Jackson’s original “Smooth Criminal” video, actually). “Follies” is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Goldman. Several of its songs have become standards, including “Broadway Baby,” “I’m Still Here,” “Too Many Mornings,” “Could I Leave You?” and “Losing My Mind.” The play was nominated for eleven Tonys and won seven. “Follies” is set in a crumbling Broadway theatre, scheduled for demolition, during a reunion for all the past members of the “Weismann’s Follies,” a musical revue (based on the Ziegfeld Follies) which played in that theatre between the World Wars. The musical focuses on two couples, Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Ben and Phyllis Rogers Stone, who are attending the reunion. Sally and Phyllis were both showgirls in the Follies as were many of the other guests. Both marriages are having problems because Buddy, a traveling salesman, is having an affair with a girl on the road, Sally is still in love with Ben as she was years ago, and Ben is so self-absorbed that Phyllis feels emotionally abandoned. The two couples interact with each other and other partygoers, and throughout the first half, musical numbers from the old Follies are performed by the characters, sometimes accompanied by the ghosts of their former selves. Most of the songs are pastiches of songs by popular songwriters of the past. “Losing My Mind” is in the style of a George Gershwin ballad, The “God-Why-Don’t-You-Love-Me Blues” is in the style of Cole Porter and “Loveland” is akin to a 1920s Ziegfeld Follies …

Bernadette Peters (born February 28, 1948) is an American actress and singer from New York City. Over the course of a career that has already spanned five decades, she has starred in musical theatre, films and television, as well as performing in solo concerts and recordings. She is one of the most critically-acclaimed Broadway performers, having received nominations for seven Tony Awards, winning two, and eight Drama Desk Awards, winning three. Four of the Broadway cast albums on which she has starred have won Grammy Awards. Peters first performed on the stage as a child and then a teenage actor in the 1960s, and in film and television in the 1970s.
